Issues Found

File: batch-8-buy-when-others-are-fearful.md

Issue 1 — Fabricated/Incorrect Statistic: VIX 2020 peak understated

Quoted text in file: "The VIX spiked to 66."
(referring to the 2020 COVID crash)

Problem: The VIX closing peak during the 2020 COVID crash was 82.69 on March 16, 2020 (intraday high ~85.47). Stating "66" significantly understates the actual fear reading by nearly 20 points and is factually incorrect. This is a verifiable public data point from CBOE records.

Suggested Fix: Replace "The VIX spiked to 66" with "The VIX spiked above 80" (or more precisely, "The VIX spiked to 82") to accurately reflect the March 2020 closing peak.

Issue 2 — Fabricated/Incorrect Statistic: 2009 S&P 500 trailing P/E misrepresented

Quoted text in file: "At the 2009 bottom, the trailing P/E had compressed to 13."

Problem: This is factually incorrect. Due to massive GAAP writedowns and earnings destruction across the financial sector, the S&P 500 trailing (reported) P/E at the March 2009 bottom was severely distorted — many estimates put it well above 100x because reported earnings were near zero or negative for the index. A figure of ~13x corresponds to forward P/E (analyst estimates of future earnings), not trailing P/E. Conflating the two is a meaningful error that misinforms readers about how value investors assess bottoms.

Suggested Fix: Change the sentence to accurately use forward P/E terminology:
"At the 2009 bottom, forward P/E estimates compressed to roughly 10–13x — even as the trailing P/E was distorted by massive earnings writedowns across the financial sector."
This preserves the educational point (valuations were cheap on a forward basis) while being factually accurate.
